An Invitation to Court

At St. Bridget’s school, the invitations started to appear mysteriously, and in the oddest of places: slipped into backpacks, lying on a pillow on one’s bed, and in once case, falling from the sky at exactly the right moment for a changeling to pick it up. On campus and in the working world, letters of invitation arrived in one’s mailbox. With some variation for childlings, they all contained the same message:

The Baron Elvon von Lain wishes your presence for the first session of Open Court, to be held on ((date given. It’s a Saturday)) starting at 7:00 pm, in the basement of In-Bounds, located at ((address given)). The entrance is at the side of the building. Please RSVP Baron Elvon or Lady Monica at ((phone number given)). Childlings and younger wilders, please show this invitation to your parents/guardians as it’s magic will ease any fears they may have in you attending.

Although this is to be an informal Court, safeguards against improper behavior will be in force. Furthermore a (hopefully) short discussion of the state of the Barony will take place.

Sincerely,
Baron Elvon von Lain,
Holder of the Deft Poet’s Freehold.

Jacobee read the invitation several times in a state of shock. For a moment, his hopes lifted, and he thought about what he'd wear (or not wear)... but then reality set in. He remembered his curse. With his face scrunched up, he ripped the invitation into a thousand pieces, kicked the garbage can (denting it), and went for a walk to cool down. He slammed the door on his way out.
After Jacobee has gone some distance, he can feel an unleashing of Glamour. Perhaps a reflecion on his mood, it seems flavored with anger - though also there is a rising note of both pain and triumph mixed in. The Glamour is strong enough that Jacobee can tell the direction the flow is coming from.

Just home from a day at All Creatures Millville, Sara reaches into her mailbox and pulls out the day's detritus. After she unlocks the door to her spacious loft apartment and tosses her keys and coat on the bench in the entryway, she sits down on the couch to sort through the mail. Two credit card offers, this month's issue of Cat Fancy, an electric bill, a cell phone bill, car insurance bill....and one peculiar-looking envelope with a sparkle of Glamour to it.

With a mischievous chirp, she tosses aside everything except the Glamourous envelope. As four small cats in varying states of health clamber about her lap and shoulders, she opens it and reads the invitation. Her ears perk up with glee at the thought of meeting some other local Fae, and she picks up the phone and dials the number given.
At Rowan University, Dru stops by the post office on her way to the Dining Hall. Balancing her books on one hip, she unlocks the PO box and flips through its contents - a letter from her uncle, ads for a local department store, a "You may have already won one million dollars!" letter, and an envelope imbued with Glamour.

What in the world? She glances at the postmark, breathing a small sigh of relief when she notices it isn't from Atlanta. Then she looks at it more closely, and opens it up, quickly scanning the letter within.

Her plan to go to the Dining Hall forgotten for the moment, she races back to Evergreen Hall and throws open her closet. What to wear...what to wear...?

She goes through about four outfits before settling on one - a royal blue dress with a full skirt that transforms into a formal gown under faerie sight. Holding it in front of herself, she twirls around in front of the mirror on her closet door. I can hardly wait!
Arriving home from a long day at his practice, Jason flips through the contents of the mailbox. Electric bill, water bill, bank statement, grocery store circular...what's this? He examines the Glamourous envelope more closely, and a wide smile spreads across his face.

Settling down in a gently-worn armchair in the living room, he picks up the phone and dials the number.
The day of the party, Elvon spent a small part of the day shopping and a large part of the day cleaning. He'd have spent some time cooking, but Mrs Turner had long ago forbid him from entering her kitchen in L.A., and the same rules applied here. Still, there was a lot to do.

Unfortunately, fewer fey had responded to his invitation than he had hoped, but it was more than he expected. All in all, a there were a nice, manageable number, in his opinion.

Elvon had made a special effort to encourage Roger to come, which was difficult to do without making it seem like he was a pedophile. After all, Roger was still lost in the Mists. It was Elvon's thought that being in a freehold would help the boy to remember who he is. Unfortunately, Roger hadn't shown any interest in coming to the party and, frankly, Elvon didn't think he was going to come.

After the hall was cleaned, with an hour to go before the party started, Elvon cleaned himself up, and dressed in a fine, but casual, attire. Short leather boots, pants made of soft doe skin, and a poet's shirt with a silver broach at his neck. (If any mortal came to the party, they'd see him in biege slacks, a white collarless shirt, and a stainless steel broach.) He then cast a quick cantrip to ensure proper Protocol, just in case.
Aidan arrives about fifteen minutes before the party is to begin, clad in full sidhe plate enameled in deep blue with silver trim, a fine rapier sheathed at his hip.

((Should any mortal be at the party, they'd see him in his uniform, with a quilted kevlar vest over the top.))
(The day before the party as the invitation is to come to him this day)

Kwame sits on the floor of his apartment looking into his basket shaking the cowery shells looking for a divination. He's keeping an eye on his true love. The one person who could make him or break him. He puts his life on the line for her.. a vampire. Yes, he knows she is a vampire, and little stitches of banality over come him everytime he sees her because the life has gone out of her. Not, the physical life, but her soul has gone with each hardened century she exsists and he wishes to break that. As shakes the basket watching the shells move about he sings a song.

</i> I am the one you deny, you push me off every time I try. But I'm all right. I'm just gonna swallow my pride put all the bullshit to the side..</i>

The shells formed a circle and he could now see into it as the center bubbled upward and Shiryn's image could be seen. He could even hear her sweet voice and he knew that his precious Assamite was up to no good. His kente cloth robes billowed in the breeze from his window as his tattooed face peered into the basket, his ears wiggled and a smile of devilment came on to his face.

"Shiryn, your arabic name gives you no meaning, for you are just as sour as you are sweet."

What he saw was her talking to the Tzmisice known as Lillian and that froze him on the spot. He liked Lillian but he also feared her for her heart was as draconic as her features. He threw down the shell basket and then gathered his belongings in a rush.

"She's flirting with disaster and it looks like I need to be there."

As soon as he grabbed his bag an envelope fell on his head, startling him. He looked at it and smiled. Opening the letter, he began to read it.

"Looks like I am going to have to do this first, my love. Protocol before pleasure. Please be safe."

He tossed his pack on his back and decided to take a quick roam to New York to find Sylver his werewolf friend to discuss some business. He would be back in Jersey in time for the Court Meeting.

((Night of the Court Meet))

Kwame was dressed to the nines. He wore a dark red robe and worn sandals. He always had a speck of red in his clothing because of his royal to parentage to the Elegba. His Elegba was shango and he was a child of Shango and would often spend his nights in hedonistic bliss with someone of thing. He arrives at 7:15, carrying a matching pack and his goatee and beared were impeccably groomed, and his septum was piereced with the finest ivory tusks. His ears also had golden rings and large lapis lazuli ear plugs that plugged the larger holds in his lobes. (of course that tusks and jewels and his large ears could only be seen by those that were enchanted. To the mortal eye, he would just be a bald man with a tattooed face dressed in an African robe)

He carried his blessed Oba and smiled as his pack rested on his shoulder. He would like to move around and see if anyone from House Eiluned were around. He and his House mates would have a blast chatting. At least in all this red, he knew he would be safe from those of House Scathatch.
Mrs Turner was setting out the first of her famous double-chocolate-white-chocolate-chip cookies when she heard a knock at the door. She looked over to Elvon, but the Baron was entertaining one of the other guests. Technically, the owner of the home should greet the guests, she thought, drawing up a bit of Changeling Courtly lore, but I pay rent here too, so that makes me as much of an owner... well, renter... as Evan is.

With a smile on her face, she walked over to the door and opened it. She thought her time among the fey in L.A. would prepare her for anything short of a 50 foot dragon asking to borrow a cup of sugar. She was wrong.

"Hel-" For a moment, all she could do was stare. "Um... Hello. I take it you are here for the party?"
Dru arrives promptly at seven, dressed in a sweeping gown of midnight blue velvet (similar to this one), her dark hair swept up into a knot on top of her head, with a few tendrils left free to frame her face. A pendant, a silver oval enameled with a black unicorn, hangs around her neck on a slender silver chain, and there are sapphire studs in her earlobes.

((Any mortals at the party see a dark-haired young woman in a blue dress with a full skirt.))
Elvon had just finished welcoming Sara when he spied Dru walking toward him. His heart began to beat slightly faster at the sight of her loveliness ((not that seeing Sir Aidan didn't do the same thing)), and he offered his hand to her, attempting to be the very model of courtesy.

"Good evening, m'lady. And be made welcome to Deft Poet's Freehold. I am Baron Elvon. I beg of thee, give me your name that I may properly announce your presence to the rest of the Court?"

Gunthar and Julien arrive on time, dressed in their finest.

Gunthar wears a tunic of leather ring mail over a saffron-colored shirt, dark leather trousers and high boots. A troll-sized sword hangs at his hip, its hilt worn smooth by generations of troll warriors.

((To mortal eyes, he appears as a tall, muscular man in dark-colored pants and a stylish-looking brown jacket.))
Julien is dressed in a black velvet heraldic cotehardie embroidered with silver crescents, over a pair of black tights and low boots made of intricately-tooled leather. His mane of raven hair falls to the middle of his back, glistening in the room's lights.

((Mortal eyes see a slender young man with dark hair, wearing a black dress shirt over black dress pants, and polished shoes.))

Roger arrives after most everyone else. He sports a number of bruises and is wearing a pair of ripped jeans and a worn jean jacket (with a quilted lining) over a t-shirt with a snarling wolf.
At the sight of Roger, Arianrhod nearly spills her plate on Aidan. He's back to normal! Swallowing her apprehension at approaching a redcap, she moves over to say hello.

"Hi, Roger," she says, briefly biting her lip. "Um, it's nice to see you again."

Cheryl didn't know why she'd come this way; it definitely wasn't the normal route she'd take home from the Wawa.

As she draws closer to the building with the leather outfits in the window, she starts seeing things out of the corner of her eye - things that shouldn't be there, and that seem to disappear when she looks at them directly. There's an odd glow about the door on the side of the building - overcome by curiosity, she steps up to examine it more closely.

That's when the feeling hits her - colors suddenly seem incredibly vivid, sounds impossibly clear, and smells unbelievably sharp. Her head spinning, she leans against the door, trying to take it all in. What's happening to me? I feel so weird...

Maybe I better call Mom and have her pick me up...I don't think I can walk home like this...

Half-leaning and half-falling against the door, she knocks. "Um, hello? C-can I use your phone?"
A small calico cat freezes in her tracks just as she's about to jump up and snag yet another piece of roast beef from the hors d'oeuvres table. The energy throbbing from the individual staggering into the room tickles the ends of her whiskers, and as she turns her head to check out the new arrival, she sees a young girl who looks rather familiar to her. And furthermore, it's obvious that the girl is frightened and confused.

As the little maneki cat's memory flashes through the images of hundreds of generations, she realizes she's met the girl in this life...and not very long ago, at that. She licks her whiskers and brushes her face with a tongue-dampened paw, to make sure there are no random bits of food or other unpleasantness on her elegant face, and then pads (between an array of feet of all sizes and shapes) over to the girl.

"Mrrrr?" she asks, looking up at the girl with large copper-colored eyes.

((OOC: This cat is clearly more than "just a regular cat." Cheryl might notice some odd colors coruscating around her and have a strange sense that there's something oddly familiar about this animal.))
((OOC: This picks up from here.))

The kaleidoscope of images spinning through Cheryl's brain subsides as she focuses on Manni's purring and the soft fur of the little cat beneath her hand. Something seems familiar about this, and she relaxes with a sigh as something inside her awakens. In her mind's eye, a butterfly with iridescent silver wings soars toward a brilliant blue-white light...

...and suddenly she is aware of her surroundings again. She opens her eyes, gazing into the worried faces around her. "What's going on?"

To fae eyes, the form of a young faerie princess is revealed for the first time. Raven hair falls around a delicate face, and eyes of a brilliant blue look out at the world, their owner's youth belied by the wisdom that lies behind them. Elegantly tapered ears peek through her hair, and her mundane clothes have been replaced by a gown of royal blue silk. A delicate silver chain holds a moonstone pendant against her smooth brow.
The cat sits up and rubs her face against the princess' hand. She stands and extends her body, purring the whole time, rests one forepaw on each side of the girl's neck, and gives her a lick on the chin.

Then she darts off between the feet of the partygoers, returning a moment later with a miniature eggroll gripped lightly between her teeth. The cat deposits the eggroll in the girl's lap and whisks herself off again.

As the assembled fae witness the Chrysalis of another of their number, there is a loud, insistent knocking on the door. A deep voice booms, "Open up, in the name of Her Excellency!"
Aidan's head whips around, one hand automatically falling to the hilt of his sword. "What in the name of the Dark Lady--?"

"Ah, of course. Countess Crysania ni Gwydion, allow me to present a most honored and trusted citizen of the barony, Doctor Iason Makarios."
"Your Excellency," Iason says with a charming smile. "I am honored." He takes her hand, pressing it against his lips. "And dazzled by your beauty." When she's not looking at him, he winks conspiratorially at Elvon.

"Would you allow me to introduce you to some of the other fae of the barony? By your leave, milord, of course," he adds, looking at Elvon.
One side of Elvon's mouth quivers momentarily, as if wanting to grin. "My thanks Dr Makarios. Now, if you will excuse me, I have a duty to preform." He lets go of the Countess's arm, and gives her a proper bow depicting their social situation: host and (a "noble") guest.

Trusting in Iason's court-side manners, Elvon goes to greet the new sidhe.
((OOC: This picks up from here>))

Ciara stays close to her friends, her eyes wide at the panoply of fae in the room. She's gradually losing her surprise at the otherworldly look of some of them, but she still seems overwhelmed by the events of the evening.
Elvon walks up to Ciara. He's smiling, and his whole mannor is gentle. "Happy Birthday, fair lady," he says. "I am Baron Elvon von Lain. You are in my home, and are safe among friends."

His smile turns into a quirky grin. "A bit much to take in all at once, isn't it?"

Recognizing the need to defuse her House-mate's temper before things get out of hand, Dru snags a selection of delicacies from among the refreshments and makes her way over to him as quickly as she can, offering him the plate when she gets there. "Here, Aidan - you have got to try some of these."
Aidan's been wrestling with his temper since Crysania's argument with Elvon, but Iason's hand on his shoulder and Dru's approach remind him of where he is. You're a knight - behave like one, dammit. If nothing else, to set a good example for Arianrhod.

With a faint sigh, he accepts the plate from Drusilla with murmured thanks, then, the crisis apparently averted, starts to drift back to the group gathered around Ciara, preparing to welcome the newest fae to the barony.

Elvon was satisfied. It seemed like his feste was a success. Everyone was having a good time, including that bitch of a countess, and as an unexpected pleasure, a new changeling was born. Unfortunately, he did have the business of forming his council to attend to. I should probably do this before it gets much later, he thinks.

He's about to call for everyone's attention, when a scream is heard from down the hall.
Aidan draws his sword with a shink of metal, his head turning back and forth as he tries to triangulate the source of the scream.

The Spider is Dead

Iason is in the middle of introducing Countess Crysania to Ariadne when the scream is heard. I'm no fighter anymore, but they might need a healer before this is all over....

"Your pardon, Your Excellency," he says with a bow to the blonde Gwydion, "but I'm afraid I'll have to leave you in your bodyguard's capable hands for now." He turns her toward her troll guardian, and then motions to Ariadne, handing her his keys. "Ariadne, dear, there's a bag in my trunk - would you bring it to me, please?"
The younger satyr nods, catching the keys and sprinting for the door as fast as her goat legs can carry her.

As the spider falls, the cold, distant expression finally leaves Aidan's face. He blinks a few times, looking around the room as if to reorient himself. "Is everyone all right?" he asks.
Elvon barely had the words "I think so," out of his mouth, when Spaz souted for his mother and ran to her.

Upon seeing his friend and housemate lying unconscious against the wall, the baron called out. "Dr Iason! Ariadne! Come quickly!"

Late into the night, Baron Elvon von Lain looked around what he hoped would be his court. Guests, both those who were welcomed and those who were… unexpected, seemed to be enjoying themselves. They were chatting away after the excitement of the spider fight. Elvon was especially glad that that piece of excitement had been dealt with quickly, and that no one had been hurt (other than Monica's mild concussion).

He stood up, in front of his chair (not quite big enough to be called a throne), and after a quick gulp, raised his glass. “My friends,” he called out to the assembled fey. Once the ruckus has died down, he continues. “I am glad that you are all enjoying yourselves, but I am afraid the time for business has come. As you know, I am attempting to establish a court in the Barony of Glass Pines. However, I will not establish a court of any power without your permission. Thus, I ask you, Children of the Dreaming, will you have me as a judge when you need an objective decision? Will you have me as a leader in times of emergency? Will you have me as your advocate to the Duchy of Gardens? What say you?”
Julien draws himself up to his full height, the preternatural beauty and grace of his kith settling over him like a cloak. He inclines his head to the Baron with a sense of ceremony. "I cannot presume to speak for any of our other brothers and sisters in the Dreaming here," his gesture indicates the kithain gathered in the hall, "but as for myself, I should be honored."

((OOC: Putting Gunthar's reply here as well for brevity.))

Gunthar comes over to stand beside his sidhe companion, offering Elvon a bow. "As would I, milord."

"Okay, gentlemen, that was the last cue of the show se. Thank you very much, off com and get out." Taylie rips of her headset and tosses it onto the desk. As soon as the sound and light board operators leave the booth, she reaches into her bag she pulls out a long black velvet dress. If the fabric was not crushed velvet before, that is the only description for it now. Taylie shakes at it impatiently and checks the gold pendant/watch around her neck. No time... Without another thought she simply slides onto the floor, half under the desk. Jeans and t-shirts off and into the bag, dress on, Doc Martins replaced on her feet simply because she'll need the mobility and then down the stairs at a dead run.

By the time her technical and backstage crew come ambling through the lobby, she is already waiting with the door held open. "Thanks again, good work tonight. Get out."
One of her fellow freshman peers at the little blond. Seeing the stage manager in a dress is something akin to seeing a monkey in heels. "You got a date or something?"
"Yes, a date. Night now."

As soon as the last boy is out the door, she shuts it behind herself and sets off at a near run. I'm probably the only fae in the whole ding-dong city who couldn't get the night off. I'm gonna get blacklisted. Or worse.

Swearing like a Nocker in the privacy of her own mind the entire way, Taylie finally arrives at the door of In-Bounds. As thrown together as her mortal garb is, at least she took a little more care with her voile (which looks much like this is done in black and gold. And, of course, worn by a Boggan) Her soot-dark hair is mussed without effort or art and her whiskey-gold eyes beg the world to be able to make an entrance without noise or fanfare. All in all, she looks like nothing so much as what she is - a Boggan unable to tear herself away from her work in time.

With the excitement over, and her mentor taking care of Mrs. Turner, Ariadne is a bit at loose ends, and feels it. She watches the accolades being given the baron, and wonders if she ought to add her voice to the chorus (despite having absolutely no idea how to do that in the proper manner), when she hears something at the door.

Glad of something to do, she moves over to the door and opens it, offering the person on the other side a smile. "Hello! Are you here for the party?"

((OOC: Ariadne is quite obviously a satyr; ivory-colored horns poke up through her long black hair, and her goat legs are covered with a pelt of silky black waves from her waist to her dainty black hooves. She's wearing a Chinese dress in green silk [which looks much like this, except for the color difference], slit to the hips for freedom of movement.))
